Final Piece Proposal
My final piece links to Annegret Soltau and Jeremy Olsen as it will incorporate the sewing from Soltau's work and Olsen's use of cubism in his work. My final piece is going to be digital and look like three images of the same hung up shape which I will bend together to make it appear as if it were one long image.
Photoshoot plan
My photoshoot plan is for the images I will take for my final piece. I have created it in order to have a clear reference point to return to when taking my photos so that I know what I have to do and what my initial ideas were. For my photoshoot I intend to take photos of people from the shoulders up facing different directions. I am going to create this photoshoot at home, aided by this photoshoot plan as it tells me what settings to have on my camera and what I need to take my photos of. My photoshoot will relate to my artists as although I will be taking quite basic and uninteresting photos I will be able to use them to create more interesting physical work as has been done by my artists who largely create physical pieces.
Contact sheets
My photoshoot was successful, partially due to the aid of my plan which directed me as to what photos I wanted to take and how to take them. When doing my photoshoot however, I used auto mode rather than adjusting the aperture, ISO, etc as this allowed me to take better photos more easily. I have created 3 contact sheets displaying the 75 photos I have taken. I did this in order to clearly lay out my photos and which of them I will be using in my editing. This is shown through the use of circles which signify the photos I will be using, whilst the crosses signify the photos I will not be using. Some images are more successful than others as they are in focus and depict good composition; however, others are unsuccessful as they are out of focus and to dark. From taking these images I learnt about the importance of good lighting as it severely affects the quality of your images. I could improve my photoshoot by taking photos of my models doing more interesting poses (for example incorporating their hands, etc) to create more variation in my images. With the photos in my contact sheets, I intend to use photoshop to edit them, making some black and white, before placing them on templates for different shape nets so that I can print them out and create interesting physical structures. These photos relate to the artists I have done so far as although they are quite basic and uninteresting I will be able to use them to create more interesting physical work as has been done by my artists who largely create physical pieces.
Process Log
Templates
To create these templates I first found the net of each shape (snub cube, icosahedron and cube) then saved them and opened them on photoshop. I used the magic wand tool to select each shape and place one of my edited images in that area before adjusting it. I repeated this process many times to fill in the entire template, some of which I did randomly and others I did following a pattern.
Process Log
To create these shapes I cut out the template and fold all of the lines within it. On the shape I was not sewing together I then glued the tabs together. For the other shape I poked holes down the sides and glued and sewed the shape together.
Gallery of Chosen Images
To create these shapes I first printed out their nets (which I had placed my images o using the magic want tool on Photoshop) and then cut them out. Once cut out I then folded all the sides on the templates and glued the tabs on the paper to their respective side creating the shape. For the shapes which were sewn on I poked holes onto the sides before gluing and sewing them together. I then set up a large sheet of white paper and took photos of all of them on top of it. These shapes link to my artists as the shapes themselves depict Olsen's use of shapes and exploration of cubism in his work, while the sewn on shapes depict Soltau use of mixed media in her work. To improve these edits I could burn or hang up the shapes in order to explore the composition of my work.
Presentation Experiments
For these composition edits I explored different methods of furthering my work. I first burnt a hole in one of the shapes and photographed it before then placing the burnt hole on top of a lamp and turning off the other lights so that the shape was illuminated. For my other developments I hung up some of the shapes I made with string and photographed them from different angles. I did this to explore different ways of presenting my work and to make my images more interesting. these images still link to the artists as they continue to depict both mixed media and cubism, however are presented differently. To improve these edits I could burn more holes in one of my shapes or hang up more shpes in a row.
Final Piece
To create my final piece I took photos of my hung up shapes and placed them together. I ten used the spot healing brush, cloning tool and adjusted their blending mode to blend them together so that it looks as if they were all taken in one photo. I have used Soltau's technique on sewing the images she has taken and Olsen's idea of using cubism within photography in my final piece. However, I have developed these ideas by experimenting with the composition of my edits, for example by hanging up my shapes and placing them together on one image. The depiction of the images together and editing of my final piece is successful, however to improve it I could photograph or edit together different shapes. If I were to make my final piece again I would create larger shapes and experiment with their composition more, for example sewing multiple shapes together.
