KETTY LA ROCCA

PHOTOSHOOT PLAN :

Untitled presentation (24).jpg

This photoshoot plan is to help document my initial ideas for the images that I plan to take inspired from ketty La Rocca. I have created this so i do not lose track of my ideas that i want to include whist i take my images. For my photoshoot i plan to take images in spired by artist and photographer Ketty La Rocca. I will do tis by taking images of models hands and annotate writing on to them. the positions of my models hand will all be different since i will be asking them to pose in positions that they deem feminine or masculine so that it feels more natural to them, following that i will be editing the photos by really darkening the backgrounds of the images to create a large contrast within the images but the hands will still have many tones within them.

This photoshoot plan will aid me by making sure i keep track of what i want to include in my image's so i do not go of track and i can be more efficient with taking my images. This will relate to  my artist because the element that i want to include in my work are already apparent with Ketty La Rocco's work.

CONTACT SHEET :

The photoshoot that i took for ketty La Rocca turned out successful. Therefore i have created this contact sheet in order to display all the images that i have taken and select the most and least successful images. Creating my photoshoot before hand was extremely helpful since it allowed me to pre plan all of my ideas for the photoshoot before hand which allowed the actual shoot to be efficient.  The only thing that was changed form my original plan was taking the photoshoot at home as well as in the classroom, since the first photoshoot went so well it was unessersary to take images at home.

I have created a series of images that are inspired from ketty La Rocca's work. I have done this to show my understanding of this artists work and photography. The crosses on some of the images represent the images that did not turn out well, this was due to them being blurry or them not having the composition that i wanted the images to have. The circles on some of the images represent the images that i thought turned out the best, this was because they had the correct composition and clarity hat i wanted the images to have that's why they were the most successful. Some things that i learned from completing this photoshoot is that it is also extremely helpful for the models for your photoshoot to see the image that you were inspired by since it can help them understand the kind of images or gestures that you want to portray in your photos.

I could improve on this photoshoot by getting  a stand for the camera to mount on so that the images are not taken handheld which could help with the clarity of the images. The next steps for the images would be to edit them by making them black and white and to darken the background of the images so the hands stand out against the contrasting background. These photos relate to my artist since the placement of the hands were mimicked form her work to my own images which shows a direct link from Ketty La Rocca and my photos.

INITAL EDITS :

I have created multiple edits relating to the artist Ketty La Rocca. I have created them by duplicating the layer of the image then i completely lowered the saturation of the image so they appear black and white. I then went into the burn tool and placed the setting on shadows with one-hundred percent and enlarged the tool and darkened the area surrounding the hand to background is black. Then i lowered the size of the tool so that i could get i not the smaller curves of the hand and gaps until the whole background was pitch black.

At this point i then cropped some of the images to correct the composition of the images so the the subject of the images (the hands) were complemented by the background and so also mimic Ketty La Rocca's work. Using the levels tool i exadurated some of the tones that appeared in the hands since the images now looked like they were taken in high key lighting when i wanted the images to look more low key. So buy changing the tone levels on the hands i was able to show a higher shade range in the hands which made the hands look more three-dimensional instead of flat. To further add to  that effect i went back in to the burn tool and set it to the mid-tone setting and changed the opacity to around twenty percent and went over the edges of the hands so they could blend better into the background.

By doing all these steps it created a complementary contrast between the foreground and the background. I did this to my images to replicate Ketty La Rocca's work. I could improve these images by adding noise to the images to created a pixilated effect on them and to help add texture so the image can relate the the artist work more. The next step i intended on taking with my images is to add words and more texture to my images. Something that i learned from these edits is how important shading is because it can really change the dimensions of an image from 2D to 3D.

Highlighting success:

Here are some of my most successful images from my initial edits. This is because i think the images have captured the essence of Ketty La Rocca's work the best so far, due to the tones the composition and the contrast alongside the hand gesture that the model has used.  All of these elements in these images have all combine together the best creating very minimalistic yet powerful images .

TEXTURE DEVELOPMENTS:

Here are my developments form my images inspired by Ketty La Rocca . I have created them by adding on from my previous initial edits. I started by using the burn tool again to remove parts of the forearm from the images to make it appear that the hands were floating within the image. To help the hand blend better into the background i used the same technique that i used in my initial edits by changing the burn tools setting from shadows to the mid-tone setting then lowering the opacity and brushed it along the edges of the hands.

Following that i went in to the noise setting and put the distortion to ten to thirteen percent so the images can look older than they are to give the images texture and a more vintage look like ketty La Rocca's work. To add more texture i used a image that was full of texture and made sure the quality of the photo was bad to further emphasize the vintage look. I changed the image's setting to lighten so that all of the black of the photo would be remove leaving the grey and white texture on the image, after that i lowered the opacity to fifteen percent. Using the eraser tool i removed the texture from the hands slightly since the eraser tool was not set to one-hundred percent so that the hands could stand out against the textured background. The word 'you' that is repeated on the hands was created buy me handwriting it on a plan piece of paper copying the handwriting that Ketty La Rocca has used in her work.

After taking a photo of that it edited it by desaturating the image then using the level tool i really exadurated the white and black that was in the background and the word  so that when i would be editing it later on to the hands there would be no colour difference from the two layers when i change the setting to darken to remove all of the white in the image. Once on the image i would transform the word so that i could alter the size and orientation of the word so that it could be placed on the hand more naturally. Occasionally i would duplicate the word and reposition it directly on another word so that the word looks like it is bold to give more of a variation within the image.  By doing this wit gives the image a more personal feel since the texture of the background and the hand written words makes it seem like someone has done it personally which helps to bring the images to life more and it as if each image has there own personal background behind it

. This is important because that was my motive for editing the images in this way since this was the impression that i got from Ketty la Roca's work when i first came across it and i wanted to replicate that felling within my own work. To improve these edits it would be interesting if i used a variety of different words for each image. Something that i learned from editing these images was how impactful texture could be in elevating a some what minimalistic image. Next i plan on adding borders won to the image to see how that changes the composition of them.

HIGHLIGHITING SUCCESS:

Here are three of the most successful edits from my texture developments these are some of my most successful edits because of the way the placement of the images and the composition of the words. i also am impressed with the way the texture came out on the images. Also i think these images can directly link to Ketty la Rocca's work the best. I also like the versatility of the hand gestures that are being shown i think it demonstrates my idea of each image having there own personal backstory. To improve these images i would like to blend the hands into the background more so they appear more seamless .

BORDER EXPERIMENTS:

Here are my boarder experiment edits . I have created them by using two methods one of them i have done it by duplicating the layer from my previous texture developments then i turned one of the layers solid white and placing it above the actual image. Then i went in to the rectangle selector tool then a drew a rectangle on the white layer with space surrounding the edges, after that i used [CTRL X ] to delete the inner rectangle which allowed the image of the hands to be seen underneath whist leaving a white border on top of  the image.

The second way i created the border was to crate a solid white layer and placing it underneath the original image. After that i went on to the original image then transformed so i could change the size and orientation of the image. So i made the image smaller then the solid white layer and tilted the image slightly to the border would be offset and have a different composition. This was the second way i created a border.

By adding a border it can help to give the illusion that the piece is more finalised and complete and by having  different types and thickness of the borders it once again links into the idea of giving the image character and its own personality and background. The ideas of the borders are inspired and link to Ketty La Rocca's work .Somethings that i would like to improve on the images would be creating different types of borders and not just rectangular ones to show variety. Next i would like to use double exposure on the images to elevate them further.

HIGHLIGHTING SUCCESSESS :

Here are some of my most successful edits from my border experiments . They are the most successful and stand out the most because since they do not have perfect symmetry within the borders and this makes for an interesting composition which adds character to the edits . Also the why the borders are places really complements and highlights the subject of the images. To improve on these edits it would be interesting to merge different hands together in an image to she how they would work together.

SECOND PHOTOSHOOT:

The second photoshoot that i took for ketty La Rocca turned out successful. Therefore i have created this contact sheet in order to display all the images that i have taken and select the most and least successful images.
