PETER DEVITO

Peter DeVito is a 22 year old full time photographer based in New York. Growing up in New York has influenced him greatly due to the diversity and multicultural people there .He is mostly known with his work with portraiture. The models that he uses for the photoshoot included very diverse individuals. The concept for his work is to bring to light the aspects of life that society has deemed unattractive, unnatural or unhealthy and showing the beauty in everyone's flaws.

He breaks the stereotypes for people who have severe acne, skin conditions such as vitiligo and for people who are deemed overweight. As well as covering major political issues to seek change and an understanding for those who are affected. Some of these issues being the 'Black Lives Matter Movement’ , ‘Women's rights', 'Stop Asian Hate’ as well as destigmatising those who are in the LGBTQIA(+) community. Fighting for all of these human rights has allowed him to do photoshoots for top periodicals such as Vogue Italia, Elle, I-D, and NYLON.

When looking at his images, it is clear to see that Peter DeVito sees beauty in every flaw that an individual may have and is also really passionate about self worth and self love. So he must be really passionate about advocating having a strong mental health before anything else. Alongside many of his images that he has taken with his models there may be a personal  handwritten note by the model talking about their experiences with discrimination and societal views and prejudice.

“What is wrong with your skin?” My battlefield is my mind. Each day I battle between how others view me and how I view myself. Although I am able to defeat most of my battles, they still affect my mind, how, and what I think. In addition, being teased, feared, and viewed differently by others caused a growth in compassion within me. For those who struggle from the same discrimination. U do not want people to view someone that is not “normal” as an outcast, but as a pleasant anomaly. Just like the clothes i wear do not define me in a photoshoot, simalarly that goes for the skin in. I will never forget, I am a man first, who is black , who has vitiligo. --Yvesmark Chery

Here is a letter that Yvesmark Chery wrote to society. This letter addresses how society has negatively viewed and treated him. He is just one of the many people that have shared their story, and it is unimaginable to think how many people may never tell their own story. Personally, i think that the work that Peter DeVito does is truly remarkable and inspiring. In a society where people are so quick to judge pr outcast someone solely based on looks or first impressions, it is very empowering to see him look past all of that and to see the beauty in people and their stories.

“I’m a photographer who takes pics of ppl w/ acne & other ppl who I don’t think are represented enough to try & show how there’s beauty in everyone.”--Peter DeVito

The focus of the image is the model who is in the foreground with a white background and his competition sits in the first and second third of the image where his right eye sits in the middle of the frame. A low aperture was used when taking this photo since there is a higher resolution with a high ISO and a fast shutter speed on the subject’s face than nearing his ear where the image begins to lose focus and become blurry. By using aperture in this image it makes it have a better depth of feild which makes the question stand out even more and makes the image appear more three-dimensional. Most of the lines in this image are organic therefore they have curves this contrasts with the question that is on the models face which are harsh straight lines and letters which makes the viewers eye more drawn to them. Since there are twenty-four characters there becomes a citrain repetitiveness with the words. There is a lack of negative space within the image, making viewers be drawn towards the personal message from the model. There is a contrast in textures in the image because there is skin that is usually has a soft and warm texture whereas the message has a shinny, glossy and hard texture. The tones in this image range from dark to light due to the model having vertigo he does not have melaine in specific areas which provides the image with an abundance of different tones and warm and cool colours.

The things that i have learned from this photographer is that everyone has a different story that they may want to share so always seek to find beauty in everyone. Also, he has made me think about the experiences that I would like to share like my own story. Elements of his work that i would like to include within my own work would to have models or to get inspiration from all parts of the world like people with different weights, heights, skin and eye colour as well as sexual preferences and gender orientations. So that i can represent a lot of the unappreciated members of society to try and shift many peoples ideologies of what is ‘normal.’

PHOTOSHOOT PLAN:

This photoshoot plan is to help document my thoughts and ideas of what I want to take images of . With this photoshoot I plan to take photos of individuals 'flaws’ and insecurities then I will cut out words and phrases to emphasize the normality of those flaws but sticking them around or on top of their insecurities. I am going to create the photoshoot in my house since that is where all of my models will be meeting, also that is where I will have all of the materials for the shoot. This plan will help me since it can make me stay on track during the photoshoot and will aid me in making sure I add all the elements that I want to include without forgetting them. This photoshoot plan relates to my artist because all of the elements that i want to include all relate to the artist since i am trying to replicate there work in my own way.
