Claire Luxton

Artist Analysis

Claire Luxton is a British contemporary multidisciplinary artist working with photography, installation, poetry and painting.  she creates a challenging series of self portraits & sculptures, pushing her emotional and physical boundaries by becoming the subject of the matter. Luxton’s work draws on both the modern anxiety of society and the environment; each portrait becoming an exploration of isolation and uncertainty. When i first saw this i was very shocked and surprised as i absolutely love this whole concept. this picture portrays the artists whole face with two plasters on her cheeks. on these she has written a sentence, however underneath the plasters she has some matches, on the other hand she is holding a lit match. we could then interfere from this that she would light the rest of the matches. it is fully focused on the whole face, flowers and words, in most of these pictures the lighting is very bright but it is evenly glowing the skin. there is, in my opinion, only one dominant line which is the band aid which draws the eyes to the words and flowers. in her flower images there are mainly organic shapes as there are no rough edges. i think that there isn't much depth as the only difference is at the slight bumps in the skin. finally i also really believe that colors in these images is really significant. overall, this somewhat reminds me of the photographer peter DeVito, who puts letter stickers on people's face to create words and phrases. this piece relates to my project as when i will be taking pictures i am going to be heavily influenced by ,mainly, her plaster and flower pictures. she uses a lower ISO, this can be shown as they are very bright which goes together with the high key artificial lighting, she uses a narrow/high aperture which means that everything could be in focus which makes it all look cleaner and it helps to show the texture of the skin. it obviously has a high shutter speed as it makes it easier to take pictures as it makes it cleaner because the picture has no movement to it.  if i could ask the artist one question it would be why she chose to use plasters for her pictures. personally i think that the flowers really bring the whole picture together.

Photoshoot plan

Screen Shot 2021-12-14 at 15.47.02.png

I have created this plan to help guide me in my latest project. for this photoshoot i intend to attach flowers with plasters onto my cheek, then write a word onto it. i am going to create this photoshoot in my house, and this plan will help me in any technical components of my project. this photoshoot is going to be related to the artists as i am going to use the basis of the artist pictures to help me create my own. they will be influenced heavily by her work.

Contact Sheet

my photoshoot was partly successful. my plan was not as helpful this time as there was no need for me to rely on it. i did not change anything but i decided to use warm lighting. i have decided to annotate my contact sheet, i have done that by putting crosses and circles. the crosses mean that the pictures are unsuccessful or there is something wrong, which means that i would not like to use them. however the circles are to point out the ones why came out the best and which one i will definitely want to use in my edits. some are unsuccessful because of the lighting or the writing or the background or just any technical problems. i could improve them by using more colourful flowers and a wider variety of words. the images in my initial edits will be used for further more developmental and creative developments.

Initial Edits

i have created my initial edits inspired by Claire Luxton the saturation and then fixed the lighting. if i needed it i also cropped the picture. this made them more similar to the artist. they finally link to the artist as they have the same basis as hers. to improve them i could have more of a variety in flowers and words. from creating these i learnt about perfecting the composition even before the editing process.

Highlighting Success

these are the final most successful pictures i have taken. i believe they are the best as they are the most similar to the artist because of the general aspects and i also have a very similar composition of just the flowers and the eye to make you focus on them.

Second Development

Contact sheet

This photoshoot was very successful. I did not use a plan for this photoshoot as it was extremely similar to my first one. I have created some physical double exposure with new, printed pictures and some were printed on tracing paper this helped to make the double exposure effect. The marks on the image show which images I find to be successful and which ones are not good enough to either relate to the artist or I just did not like them enough. From this I learnt this new technique to do a easier double exposure. to improve this photoshoot o could use more images and print more on tracing paper.

Edits

These are my second developments, for these I bought very colorful flowers, separating the leaves and petals and individually placing them under the eye and around the body. I did this because it still links to the artists but I also decided to put my own twist on it. I feel like they could be better than the artist as they use a broader variety of placement and, because I am separating the petals, it will be more intricate. I will also expand them by having some glossy makeup to bring it together. I might include some sawing to link these to my previous and next artists. To improve these edits I could try to use color lookup to expand it more. From creating these images I learnt how delicate flowers really are and how to properly place them. After this for my third developments I will probably use double exposure and mirroring to further expand these.

Highlighting Success

These are my favorite and most successful pictures. I really like these as the process was very simple and since it was physical I was able to have control over the images very easily. I really like the final texture and image of it. I used double exposure and also mirroring techniques to have some variety.

third development

This is my third development for Claire Luxton. I have created these by taking the pictures from my previous development and then taking the tracing paper prints and cutting out the flower then stitching then back on. this created a 3d flower effect. this really helps to bring out the basis of her pictures. I think that these were quite successful. maybe to improve these I could experiment with some camera angles. I particularly liked this process as it was a way for me to be more creative and the stitching links well with the last development of my previous artist, Peter DeVito.

Highlighting success

These are my most successful images, in my opinion. I think that the stitching came out very well and also I really liked experimenting with angles and different shots. Also, I really like the fact that it still has the same components of Claire Luxton but with the added component from my Peter DeVito images.
