Artist Analysis

Barry Rosenthal is a photographer and sculptor who studied photography at Dayton Art Institute in Ohio. His work is kept permanently in the Museum of Modern Arts in New York.

The work I will be studying and analysing is called “Found In Nature”, started in 2007 as an example of his work. However, it has evolved into miniature objects which were put into large scale images that represent all the waste that is found in the ocean nowadays. Rosenthal prepares to take his photos by separating the objects into categories such as colours. By doing this Barry Rosenthal brings awareness to the global crisis of ocean pollution and Climate Change. He does this as his objects are taken from the ocean and most are made of plastic as plastic is very bad for our environment as it takes an extremely long time to decompose.

Rosenthal has also gained a lot of popularity due to him trying to resolve a global issue (ocean pollution) as people all around the world have seen it and even his magazine getting published into magazines in different countries. The reason for Barry Rosenthal to create “Found In Nature” is that he wants “to inspire the building of a more sustainable future. As an entrepreneur to show and sell my work. As an advocate, to create awareness of marine plastic pollution. As a witness to show proof. As a public speaker, to add to the discourse about plastics in our environment. As a creative collaborator, to partner with institutions and companies taking a stand. And as an educator, to guide students in a multi-discipline approach to rethinking plastic packaging.”

Rosenthal creates his photos from “Found In Nature”. He takes the objects which are in the same category and puts them all on a big background (black or white). He crops the photos but barely edits them. If he did edit it the photos would be without the natural connotations that the collection has now as it is all about saving nature.

Photoshoot Plan

My photoshoot plan shows how I will take my photoshoots and what I am going to use t0 relate to Barry Rosenthal but do it slightly different. It shows what camera settings I will use, background, lighting and props which I will use e.g. glass jars which I will use in my first photoshoot. The photo on the photoshoot plan is an example of a photo from "Found In Nature" created to make awareness on the global issue of ocean pollution.

First Developments (Contact Sheets)

These are the photos from my first developments while studying Barry Rosenthal. To take these photos put glass jars on a black background then on a white background. I then took photos from above and from the different sides. I used glass jars (in the same category, like was Rosenthal would do). I also used two big lights to create the high-key lighting that I wanted.

First Development

My first developments were created using a large amount of glass jars stacked next to each other to create the same aesthetic as Barry Rosenthal's photos. I took many photos from different angles some from birds eye view (like Barry Rosenthal) and some from all around the jars creating many different photos. To create these photos I turned the saturation all the way down to make the photos into black on white.

Highlighting Success

These three photos are the best photos in my opinion out of the nine that I edited. I believe this as the composition and lighting are the best in these three images; two key elements someone needs to create a good photo while creating it. I created these photos by making them black and white and also changing the contrast by making it higher

Second Developments

I created my second developments by double exposing nine images and then changing the contrast and on some of them adding a photo filter. Some of the photos I used were taken from a birds eye view and some were taken from straight on angles to experiment away from Barry Rosenthal's work. Also, on some photos I had to add in some of the white background as some of the parts of the background were different.

Highlighting Success

I chose these image as the I believe that I utilized my tools and placed my different elements better than in the other 6 edits. I like how I used the change of contrast and the type of double exposure. Furthermore, I like the composition and the background more. When the background was black the lighting was too dark but I was going for high-key lighting.

Third Developments Contact Sheets

These are the contact sheets for my third developments for Barry Rosenthal. In this photoshoot I have taken 22 bottle caps (from a variety of different bottles) and placed them on different backgrounds with a variety of textures to experiment with which looks best. The three backgrounds I used were: a tinfoil tray, a silver bowl and a large sheet of white paper. From what I have here I will edit the photos by adjusting the lighting and then I will add more bottle caps into the gaps to get rid of the negative space.

For these developments I double exposed and warped the bottle caps. I did not want to do something too similar to what I have done previously. I did this because I had a lot of negative space. Furthermore, I wanted to do something eye catching and intriguing for the audience rather than some used bottle caps layered on one another.

Highlighting Success

These three photos are the photos ,which I think are the best as I like the composition and the different warps. Also, I like the composition on some of these photos how the different bottle caps are placed and how they correspond with the other bottle caps.
