"Enchanted Objects" - Hanne Zaruma

Artist Analysis

Hanne Zaruma, born 1999 was an artist and a law student in Ukraine. She uses retro technology such as flip phones to offer a vital materialistic approach that emphasises how beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The series of work I am analysing is called “Enchanted Objects”. In the photo it shows many retro phones in a container covered in cling film (normally used to store meat) showing different parts of the face: eyebrows, lips, eyes and nose. On the top right of the container it shows a label with the letters Hanne Zaruma and the price of 14,14 in Ukrainian Hryvnia. In my opinion, I think this photo represents how technology is now overused in society today.

The phones in this photo are organised in quite a random pattern as the different areas on the face don’t link together like a puzzle. Zaruma uses a lightly textured polystyrene background and a slightly reflective element of cling film to cover the phones. This particular piece of work is quite small (around the size of an A4 piece of paper.

The materials used in the photo were many retro phones, a polystyrene container, a cling film cover and a custom label (like the ones you may find on meat products or fruit). The piece of art is somewhat like a collage of phones in my opinion.

This piece of work reminds me of something dystopian because it makes me imagine if the world has gotten to a point where all the world is running on is technology and not food and not water. It does intrigue me as if we did ever get to this point. I would wonder how.

I think Zaruma is trying to tell us that this generation or in the 21st century we are too focused on technology and not what might and probably is more important. I'm not 100 percent sure what exactly Zaruma is trying to communicate but I refuse to believe that it’s something good.

Photoshoot Plan

My photoshoot plan shows how I will take my photoshoots and what I am going to use t0 relate to but do it slightly Hanne Zaruma different. It shows what props I will use, background, lighting and composition which I will use e.g. technology which I will use in my first photoshoot.

Contact Sheet

These are the contact sheets for my first developments for Hanne Zaruma. In this photoshoot I have taken technology and placed them on different backgrounds with a variety of reflections to experiment with which looks best. The objects I used were: a tinfoil tray, a phone, 2 brick phones, a kindle, headphones, a remote and a large sheet of white paper.

First Developments

My first developments for Hanne Zaruma are meant to represent how technology is overused now- a-days and how it is a large part of our society. The tags in the photos represent how each one is used and why.

Highlighting Success

I prefer these two photos as I like the composition more and I feel like it conveys a better message than some of the other 4 photos. Furthermore I prefer the photos ,which have a white paper background rather than having a clear background as I think that it affects the lighting.

Second Developments

These are my second developments for Hanne Zaruma where I have double exposed them and have also explored with the colours (hue). As you go down the images the hue increases more and more. I did this as I felt that the double exposure wasn't enough as it doesn't portray the message I wanted it to. I feel that editing the images like this makes them a lot more interesting and helps convey the image I wanted it too.

Highlighting Success

I chose these two images to be in my highlighting success as I believe that they are better than the other four. I say this as I feel like I utilized my tools better than the others: composition, double exposing and using the hue tool. Furthermore, in these two photo the image I am portraying is clearer. To improve on this in my third developments I will not mix too many elements together to make it clearer to the viewer.
