Artist Analysis

I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy.

Lindsey Adler is an American portrait and fashion photographer based out of Manhattan, New York and her fashion editorials have appeared in numerous fashion and photography publications including Marie Claire, Elle Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel, and dozens more. The  photographer and educator has been a speaker at many photography events, and continues to teach at conferences all over the world and on industry-leading platforms. Lindsay is also the author of four books. When I first looked at her work, I felt immediately inspired as I loved the different colours and textures that I saw in the images. I also felt a sense of mystery as they had a serious feel because of the darker tones.

I believe the lighting is from a studio light as it's colourful and you can see as it reflects on the models faces. The image is in focus and you can actually see the close details of the models face and in particular the models hair appears to be the sharpest part of the image and I imagine the texture would be quite rough. The tone contrasts from the red background to a cool blue where the face is which exaggerates the outline of the models face which I think makes the image more exciting.

I believe Adler's main focus is the aesthetic of the photograph as she is a fashion photographer however, the previous artist that I looked at, (Jamshidi) focused more on the deeper meaning behind the image and looked more at emotions rather than the overall aesthetic of his work. Nonetheless I am still very inspired by Adler's work and how she has created the contrast in colours of lighting; as well as looking at the cultural element of her work through fashion and portraiture.

Photoshoot Plan

I have created my photoshoot plan to help guide me with my shoot. This plan will help me because it will help me prepare everything I need to do before I do it such as: bringing in the right equipment, bringing the right clothes, setting up the camera, and putting up the background.

This photoshoot was successful as it turned out similarly to Adler's work. I used LED lights to replicate the artists images by facing the lights towards the models so it would reflect on their faces, and I used to sets of lights. One of the lights was set to one colour, whereas the other light was set to a different colour to create a blend of colour. Some of the images were more successful because of the different poses and some were also overexposed.

First Developments

Highlighting Success

I have created these edits by burning the background using the 'burn' tool and lowering the using the 'levels' tool. Then I lowered the exposure using the 'exposure' tool and increased the saturation using the 'hue/saturation' tool as well as changing settings on the 'levels' tool. I did this so that the colours would be vibrant however I wanted them to have a dark, mysterious tone - similar to the artist. I am really pleased with how these turned out as they have a similar   feel to Adler's work.

I have chosen these as my most successful because I really like how the light is shining on their faces, I also like the way the models face is tilting in the first 2 images, as well as how in the third image the models hands are positioned.

Second Developments

in these edits, I have integrated the work of my last artist (Jamshidi) and current artist (Adler) by using my first developments with colour and editing the layer of Arabic text on certain parts of the body to include aspects of cultural identity within this artist. I think this made the edits quite powerful as they are the product of combining the styles of different photographers to create something unique.

Highlighting Success

I believe these are the most successful edits because they are the most dynamic compared to the rest, the gestures of the hands make the images more interesting. Additionally, I like the parts of the body where the text has been added as it makes the other areas of the image stand out, for example, the white shirt.
