Artist Analysis
Mohammad Jamishidi is an Iranian photographer and graphic designer. Jamshidi took third place at the International Poster Biennial of Mexico ; he was placed third for his poster 'Fear and Mental Anguish' in Category A of the biennial which is dedicated to cultural posters. The International Poster Biennial of Mexico has opened up a new space for the diffusion of universal visual culture. For twenty years, it has enabled the presentation of creative proposals from the five continents. When I first saw Jamshidi's work, I felt a sense of sorrow because the piece was about depression and fear but the more I looked at it the more inspired I became. I also became curious as to how the artist had edited the images.
In this piece, the artist has used low-key lighting as the background is dark and has potentially used studio lighting although it is not apparent as the image is in black and white, however there is a distinct shadow in some areas of the image and areas where there could be sunlight. The writing edited on the body creates dominant lines that indicate the body is moving as well as the repetition of the writing creating a pattern. The placement of the writing as well as the different tones make the image appear 3D. The composition of the image is centered with the model placing one of their hands on their neck and one hand on their head which highlighted the the feelings Jamshidi was trying to portray.
When observing this photograph I felt curious as to how Jamshidi had come up with this idea and how the editing process felt. I believe that Mohammad tried to communicate the feeling that anxiety and fear can give to someone. While analysing his work, it has made me realise that I am excited to try to edit in the same style as the artist and I am ambitious to try it for myself.

Photoshoot Plan

I have made this photoshoot plan for my second artist Mohammad Jamshidi as a way to prepare how I will carry out the photoshoot. I intend to take interesting photographs of the body - mainly hands to begin with and this is so that I can create my edits.
Contact Sheet

I believe my photoshoot was quite successful because it turned out well technically, however I think that I could have explored with more hand gestures and exposed more of the models hands. The circled images are the ones that I believe are the most dynamic from the rest, and the crossed out images are the photographs that are the least successful for me.
How I make my edits:

First I drop the image of the writing onto the hidden image and make it larger or smaller to fit how I would like
Then, I change the overlay to 'darken' so the white parts of the image don't show when I duplicate them

Here, I am now duplicating multiple layers of the writing next to each other to form a pattern of writing
Once I have duplicated enough layers, I select every layer and merge them to create one layer

Then, I press 'ctrl' and 'I' to invert the colours so they can be layered on the image
Then, I unhide the image and change the overlay of the text layer to 'darken'

Finally, I use the 'eraser' tool to take off parts of the writing on certain areas of the image
First developments

I have created these edits in the style of Jamshidi with writing from the Quran edited on hands. For these developments specifically, I changed the colour of the text using the 'Hue/saturation' tool and used a layer mask to make the other hand a different colour. I did this to make them more exciting rather than only black and white. I am very pleased with how these came out but hope to include more parts of the body in my next developments.
Highlighting Success

I believe these are the most successful because the parts of the hands are in more visible detail as you can see things like the outline of the fingers and the gaps between them which I think makes them more aesthetically pleasing to look at; as well as the difference in colours in the hands make them more interesting.
Contact Sheet: Unsuccessful Second Photoshoot

unfortunately, although I really liked how the photographs turned out, I was not able to use these for my developments as it was not possible to edit them. This is because the model was wearing a black top which does not work out once edited with writing. However I am still satisfied with the outcome as it gave me the opportunity to experiment with my camera.
Contact Sheet

This photoshoot turned out to be the most successful for me and I am very pleased with the outcome. In this shoot, I included more shots of the body and also achieved more interesting poses/gestures from the model which was more similar to the work of Jamshidi. The shots that I circled are the most successful to me because they are quite captivating; more parts of the skin is shown, or the composition of the hands, or they are more eye-catching than the rest. The crossed out images are the ones where they are out of focus or where I should have improved the placement of the hands.
Second Developments

I have created these edits to further imitate the work of the artist. These developments are different to the first ones because here, I have erased some parts of the image with text on them so they can stand out more and so the body is more visible and can be seen rather than completely covered by the writing. I think they are successful and I am happy with how these edits came out.
Highlighting Success

These are the most successful to me because I like how the white shirt contrasts the black writing, as well as the poses captured being the most mysterious. I also like how the outline of the body is detailed with the text.

In this photoshoot, I incorporated colour into the photographs by using LED lights and holding them next to the models face so the colour would shine on her. The marked images are the ones which are my favourite as I like how the light is reflecting, whereas the crossed out images are not successful because they are mostly out of focus and some are very exposed. I am pleased with the result and I believe this shoot was successful however if I were to improve, I would include more of her body in the shots.
Third Developments

These edits are similar to my second developments however they are in colour. This is different to the artist as Jamshidi does not have colour in this piece but I am satisfied with how these experiments went. To improve I would try to lower the exposure more.
Highlighting Success

I found these to be the most successful, especially the first one, because I really like the placement of the text on her hand and the blend of the colours on her face
