Hidden Identity

Concept

I spent a bit of time reading articles about hidden identities and collecting images around the topic. After doing so, I compiled them onto an A4 sheet of card and arranged them into this collage. A common theme among the articles (the ones about the concept of' hidden identity', not about the television show) was hiding identity to fit in better with society. I read two based upon hidden identity in literature, and one about students attempting to hide their identities. Despite them being written for different purposes, it was clear in each article that hiding identity was a way to protect the individual ("students with hidden identities must consider whether to reveal personal information about themselves that might lead to discrimination from their peers as a result of conscious or unconscious bias" and "an identity that they've tried to alter in order to become more at ease in the society they belong to"). This is interesting to me as I've always thought that the more people are authentic about themselves, the easier it will be for everyone to be authentic. If everyone is more open about being unique, people won't feel the need to pressure themselves into being the same as others. For this reason, I would like to work with hidden identity. Looking at works relating to hidden identity has given me the idea to try to physically manipulate photographs of people in order to obscure their appearances. By the end of the project, I would like to relate this back to the "fitting inside a box" feeling that these articles have presented in relation to reasons for hiding identity.

These are some of the images I found for this concept. I particularly like the images where several photographs of the same face have been layered to create a pixelated effect. I think this looks both really interesting and it reminds me of censorship, which in this case relates to censorship of identity.
