Initial Thoughts
Mind Map
This is the mindmap I made when I first heard about the Identity project. I wanted to get all my ideas about what comprises someone's identity down in one place so that I could come back and reference it throughout the project. I thought about appearance, which I thought played a big part in identity. This is because it includes many other things. Of course, there is self-expression; the way you style your hair, the way you dress, whether you wear makeup or shave or follow beauty standards, but there is so much more. Appearance can also encompass race and community and the traditional styles each community has. Another thing I considered when thinking about Identity was personality; what we like and what we don't, political views, aspirations and fears, who you're friends with, how you choose to spend your time. There's so much more to Identity than first meets the eye. It's more than just one word can sum up due to all its different components. That's what I thought about when introduced to this topic.
Mood Board
I also made a mood board for the start of Identity to compile inspiration from other photographers. I thought it would be useful to see what other people have done with the same prompt as it would help me to visualise what my own work could look like. I am particularly intrigued by the photographs where the faces are obscured. I think this is because it takes away such a large part of our identities. As I mentioned above, appearance is self-expression, it's how we show the world our personalities. As a result, when this is taken away identity becomes harder to find. It's like when you meet someone you've been hearing about for a long time and are finally able to "put a face to a name". The face is what makes someone real, it's what our brains are designed to recognise. Without a face, we lose part of that identity as a recognisable person.
